by Nicole Mallalieu

You will need
35cm towelling (use a cheap bath or hand towel)

25-40cm Contrast fabric for binding
For the Pocket - OPTIONAL
8cm contrast fabric
8cm Fusible, woven interfacing
8cm plain cotton fabric (to line the pocket)

DOWNLOAD THE PATTERN HERE (pdf)

1. Using a window (or light-box) behind the pattern, align the broken lines and stick the pattern pages together with tape.

TIP: You can use the page break as a point to lengthen or shorten the bib pattern if you wish. You can also trace off the front pattern on the fold, to make a full pattern for the front piece, which will be more accurate than cutting fabric on the fold.

2. Pin out the pattern and cut 1x front and 2 x backs in both the main fabric and the towelling. If you’re using the pocket, cut out one piece in each of the materials listed above. Fuse the interfacing to the main fabric of the pocket piece.

3. Stay-Stitch or tack/baste the fabric to the towelling/lining around each piece.

4. Trim around the towelling edges of the bib pieces tomake sure the edges of fabric and towelling are level. This will make the binding easy to attach.

5. Follow the instructions on the bias tape maker, cut, join and press enough bias strips to make 2.25m of bias binding.

6. Fold the bias tape in half lengthwise, and press a crease the whole way down the middle of the tape – bringing the two folded, outside edges together.

7. Wrap the tape over the edge of the pocket top (optional) and the long, centre-back curves of the back pieces, and stitch the binding into place (you can use a zigzag stitch if you’re not confident of the accuracy of your sewing).
8. Line up the shoulder seams. Sew them at a depth of about 7mm (or ¼ inch) and overlock, zig-zag or use binding to trim the seams.

9. Overlay the pocket (if you choose to use it) and staystitch it in place around the outside edge.

10. Leaving a length of about 15cm (6”) from each centre-back point, sew the binding around the outside edge of the neckline. Stitch the folded edges of the binding together from end to end of the length of tape. Tie a knot to “seal” each end of the tape.

11. Sew binding around the outside edge of the bib - from the base of one side seam to the base of the other. Leave about 1cm of binding running over the end of the side seam.

  12. Fold the armhole of the bib around, until the bound side seam edge meets the widest part of the bib front.

13. Overlap the edge so that it sits about 5-10mm past the sewn edge of the bias binding on the front of the bib. Tuck the 1cm over-run of binding up under the side seam, and pin it into place.

14. From the right side of the bib, stitch over the stitching on the bias tape. This will attach the base of the armhole to the front of the bib.
15. Hand-stitch any little raw ends of the binding at the side seam out of sight.
  16. Give the bib a press....TOO CUTE!
